Well, the Checks & Balances afghan combines my love of texture with my love of being cozy and warm while reading a book, drinking a cup of coffee, hanging out next to a bonfire with friends, and making memories with family. (Betcha didn’t think I’d tie that all in, huh?)

The repeating sections provide ample opportunity to customize the blanket based on your yarn choices! With two sizes, baby and throw, the blanket can be made for everyone. The baby size not only makes a great baby blanket…it also makes the perfect lap blanket! The throw works as a couch decoration, movie watching blanket, or a cuddly throw for the coffee and book lovers (like me).

Baby: 40” x 44”⁠
Throw: 60” x 65”⁠

MATERIALS:

  • Hook: 4.50mm for DK; 6.50mm for worsted
  • Yarn: DK (Mandala, KnitPicks Sport); Worsted (Lion Brand Pound of Love, Brava 500)
  • Yardage:
    • Baby (weight 3): 1500 ⁠
    • Baby (weight 4): 1350⁠
    • Throw (weight 4): 3000⁠

GAUGE:

DK: 14 stitches of criss-cross or DC x 8 rows = 4” x 4”
Worsted: 12 stitches of criss-cross or DC x 6 rows = 4” x 4”

STITCHES USED: BPDC, FPDC, FPHDC, Criss-Cross, SC
